PERFECT PALETTE TAG 1

Updated: Oct 20, 2019

Given how much I love palettes, this type of blog post would have been expected from me at some point or another. If you're tired of seeing that same palettes being talked about over and over, I can assure you that you will see some unique options in this post, evidenced by the palettes below.

Palettes not featured on this post: Juvia's Place The Warrior Palette, BH Cosmetics Daisy Marquez Collab palette, and BYS Cosmetics Rebel Palette

This tag was created by the mother-and-daughter duo from iluvfaces1042 on YouTube. They have also made a follow-up to this, which I will be getting to in a future post.

To make things more fun, I will be giving two different palette recommendations to each category, one high-end or alternative brand (including indie and not-so popular brands) and drugstore brand. Without further ado, here is my version of the tag.

Best Packaging

Drugstore: I Heart Revolution (Chocolate Palettes)

I mean, do I need to explain this to you? Just look at them.

Many of these palettes also smell like chocolate and other types of candy as well but they're not edible

Indie: B'ellegant Cosmetics

I don't necessarily like cardboard packaging, and it's a bit unfortunate that this is what a lot of indie brands can afford to have. But I kind of like how the packaging of the Gem Obsession Palette feels. It feels like it's made with flecks of gilded gold and definitely doesn't feel cheap.

Not to take anything away from the gorgeous packaging of the Jewel Queen Palette either. I like the different types of glitter encased in the palette and the fact that it cascades down when you hold this palette in a vertical position. I also like the size of this palette, it is so compact and easy to bring.

Best Color Payoff

I apologize for the lack of swatches in this category, I only have two arms. But if you would like to see some of these palettes swatched out, I will link the blog posts in the texts below.

Indie: Bad Habit Beauty

This brand's eyeshadow formula is pigmentation at its finest. And it's not just for swatches' sake either. They go on that pigmented on the eyes, blend beautifully, and last throughout the day. Pictured below are the Athena Palette and the After Shock Palette, both dupes of Huda Beauty palettes (a brand I don't consider cruelty-free for this reason).

Drugstore: Colourpop Cosmetics

I now consider Colourpop a drugstore brand since they are now sold in Sephora in the US, and they are therefore, no longer independent. I'm not complaining though.

Counterclockwise from the top: Chasing Rainbows Palette, Through My Eyes Palette (Sarahii Collab), Good Sport Palette, and Ooh La La! Palette

The brand kept their affordable prices, and it's that much easier to get them in the Philippines now. If there's a brand that has perfected the one-swipe intensity formula, Colourpop is definitely one of them. I have a more in-depth review of the pink 9-pan palette here.

Most Versatile

Surprisingly, the most versatile palette that a brand can come out with can sometimes be a collaboration palette. A beauty influencer or makeup artist would obviously know what they love in a palette and will make sure there's balance and variety, especially if they adore color and getting creative. Kudos to these two for putting these palettes out there!

Indie Brand: BPerfect Cosmetics x Stacey Marie MUA - Carnival Palette

If you're looking for a palette full of beautiful and vibrant colors, this is it. I admit that the packaging is pretty plain, but I do think this palette does have a great formula.

It honestly does have a lot to offer you, and I really feel like I haven't done all the looks I can possibly make with this palette just yet.

Emphasis on "yet"

Drugstore: Revolution Beauty x Emilynoel83 - The Wants Palette

I really think Emily was serious when she said that she wanted this palette to be as versatile as possible. It has a nice mix of neutral and colorful shades and isn't too cool- or warm-toned.

I have found that I can create a plethora of looks with this palette, and it's somewhat frustrating because it's just 24 shades but the possibilities really do seem endless with it. Like the Carnival Palette, I still think I can create so many other looks with this palette without any repeats. If you want to learn more about this palette, I posted a more detailed review not so long ago.

Best for Traveling

High-End: Tarte Goddess Glam Eye and Cheek Palette

Now here's a brand that knows how to do travel-friendly all-in-one palettes well. They have bigger versions and more compact versions, depending on your needs. While the brand is known to be boring and pretty neutral in general, I have always liked their all-in-one palettes.

Of all their travel-friendly palettes, I do like this one the most. It beats out all my travel-friendly palettes from drugstore and indie brands. I tend to go for more neutral looks when I travel as it's usually for a special event when I do have to bring makeup with me.

I like how easy the eyeshadows are to work with, and I love the pink blush and pink highlighter. I think that's very obvious in the way both cheek powders look in the photo above - damage was done.

Biggest Regret

High-End: Kat Von D 10th Anniversary Palette

It's safe to say that I have never been truly amazed by any Kat Von D product that I have bought. Given that track record, I really should have known better when I bought this palette.

It was a very expensive regret for a palette that I just think is just okay. You can find my more in-depth review of the palette here.

Drugstore: Detail Makeover Autumn Palette

I dislike overly neutral eyeshadow palettes but I still bought it. I suppose I thought that the shades looked more like vibrant oranges and greens in the store. I was wrong. The store lighting fooled me. It's been decluttered now.

Best Color Names

High-End: Too Faced Sweet Peach Palette

These names are sweet and nostalgic for me because they bring back memories I have of eating peaches in New York. It's a deeply personal and subjective thing to base this category on but I can't love other shade names like I love these ones.

Drugstore: Revolution Beauty x Sophdoesnails Extra Spice

Aside from the fact that many of these shades are named after food (which is always a plus). I honestly find the rather candid and personal shade names (Running Late, Infinity,Vitamin C) rather cute. These names make me smile (or crave sweets) when I use this palette.

Least Used

High-End: Urban Decay Naked Cherry Palette

After I tested out this palette for my pink palette blog post, I haven't really picked it up to use it, or even look at it since then.

I honestly don't really like the Naked Palette formula, and these shades definitely blend into each other and look the same on the eye. I also have a more detailed review here.

Drugstore: BH Cosmetics Zodiac Love Signs

This palette is a nice mix of matte shades and shimmer shades - but it's the color scheme that's weird to me.

It's actually pretty colorful, I just think the matte shades just don't have a lot of variety and the shimmers do. That's not exactly my favorite type of colorful palette, it's quite challenging for me to use.

Most Used, Most Loved

Most Used: Bad Habit After Shock Palette

I cannot get enough of this palette. I tried to hold off using it again to test out other palettes that I had, but I just couldn't resist reaching for it again.

It's only 9 shades but it's so easy to create a plethora of colorful looks with minimal effort because the shadows are quite easy to work with. If you want a small palette that will inspire you and let you just play with color, this is it.

Most Loved: Revolution Beauty New-trals vs. Neutrals Palette

This is my first Revolution Beauty palette and I love it for so many reasons. I love the shade range, I love the pigmentation, I love the brush. For the longest time, this was my ol' reliable palette, and I see it that way until now.

At the time, this was supposed to be a dupe of both the Lime Crime Venus Palette and the Urban Decay Naked 3 palette. Since I don't have either, I can't really tell. Though if you wanted both those palettes, this is a nice and convenient alternative to having to buy both of them.

Desert Island: BH Cosmetics Weekend Festival Palette

I would honestly be happy with using just this palette if I was stuck on a desert island. It has a beautiful shade range, and I honestly love the range of mattes and shimmers.

Unlike the Zodiac Love Signs palette, this is the kind of colorful palette I like to use and will keep using. The fact that this is limited edition is a real tragedy.

My Final Thoughts

So that's it for this tag. I hope these picks are show you different choices to consider for a palette and guide you in your next makeup purchase. Of course, this is not the only palette-related tag out there, and you will definitely see more posts like this from me in the future. As always, you can always expect my recommendations to be as accessible and as varied as possible.
