Hello everybody, so sorry for my 2-week absence. The social climate in the Philippines hasn't been that great. I've also been dealing with an ongoing deployment (the boy), a virtual wedding, and multiple deaths in my family. It's been hard, and while I slowly get back into the swing of things (and taking decent selfies), here's a good old tag post. This week's feature is my take on Kaily Baute's Palette Recommendation Tag.
You've seen some of these palettes before on this blog. Others are new and still have reviews coming up. Either way, this is how I currently feel about the palettes in my collection. And here we go!
1. Best Palette for Beginners
Smink Smarkle in My Eyes Palette (Not Vegan)
I've always thought that your first palette should be from a local brand. I think it instills support for local brands so you can eventually venture into international brands without a mindset that imported doesn't always mean better. And for people starting out with eyeshadow, this is my recommendation.
It's a nice local palette with a superb formula in an array of colors that are neutral but still fun. Besides, why does your beginner palette have to be 50 shades of brown anyway?
2. Best Drugstore Palette
Revolution X Patricia Bright Rich in Colour Palette (Vegan)
I have a lot of palettes that can fit this category, and I think this is one of them. This was such a beautiful and well-thought-out collaboration, and I love what she came out with. And in what's going on right now in the West, I wanted to highlight a black collaboration.
This is a newer addition to my collection but I felt so inspired and had a lot of fun with this palette. It was so easy and fun to use. I adore the versatility of the color scheme of this palette. The quality is also the best I've seen from Revolution Makeup so far. It does stain your eyelids though, so do be wary of that if your eyes are on the sensitive side.
3. Best Palette for Work/School
I Heart Revolution Praline Palette (Vegan)
While I do focus on eyeshadows on this blog, I understand that most people would prefer to wear just face and cheek products to work or school. So, I recommend this chocolate face palette. Yes, it does have a sweet smell.
I do like the quality of the cheek products here. I like the glowy blush, the three different shades of blindingly pigmented highlighters, and the brontour (bronzer and contour) powder. The colors are quite versatile and can work for a good range of skin tones. And if you need to eyeshadow, you can easily use these powders on your eyes.
4. Best Palette for a "Natural" Way to Play with Color
Revolution x Soph Extra Spice Palette (Vegan)
I quite liked this palette more than her first palette because it's a little more colorful without being too intimidating. I also like that Soph also decided to choose bright colors for this palette as well.
If you like having browns but you want to get into bright warm-toned colors, I definitely recommend this palette! It has a nice range of brown shades and a yellow, a red, a fuchsia, and even an orange. It lets you venture a bit out of your comfort zone while letting you play with color.
5. Biggest Bang for Your Buck
ABH Norvina Pro Pigment Palette Vol. 2 (Vegan)
While it is more high-end, I do honestly think this is a really good deal if you really want to have a nice cool-toned palette full of bright and neon colors. I think this is worth the price I paid for it (it was $60 at the time), but if you can get this on a discount or a sale, even better. It's a permanent product, btw.
I think this is the most unique out of all the three palettes Norvina released under this product range. Even with my bigger collection, this palette just rounds everything out so much more. The shades were quite easy to work with and I had little issue blending them out, even if they're pressed pigments. The lid staining is quite bad though, so keep that in mind.
6. Best Palette for Fair Skin
Pinky Rose Exotic Peacock (Not Vegan)
I have fair skin with cooler undertones so I like the way cool colors (blue, pink, violet, green, etc.) look on my skin. I used to stay away from these colors because I knew they emphasized how pale my skin is. But now, I feel confident and pretty when I wear cool-toned eyeshadows and it started with this palette.
I was delighted to find out how nice the colors looked on me and really gave me a different look. For a more in-depth review, check out my earlier blog post here.
7. Best Palette for Brown Eyes
Monochrome: CP It's My Pleasure Palette (Not Vegan)
My favorite thing about having brown eyes is that any color of eyeshadow looks great on you! But if you're looking for specific palettes, I have two for this one. If you want a more monochrome palette, definitely go for a purple palette like the It's My Pleasure Palette from CP.
Any purple palette really would work, but I think this is the most accessible one. It's on the warmer side of purple and has some beautiful metallic shades that will really make your brown eyes pop!
Multicolored: Ace Beaute Flair Palette (Vegan)
If you want something with more versatility, a palette with golds and blues works as well, like the Ace Beaute Flair Palette. It has nice rich colors that will bring out your eyes, you can find an in-depth review and some eye looks here.
This palette has warm and cool colors, which is something that I always look for in a colorful palette. I also like the formula of these eyeshadows, they're pigmented, long-lasting, and blendable. Not much lid staining, but the bright reds and purples will still leave behind some traces on your eyelids.
8. Best All in One Palette
BH Cosmetics Run Wild by Tina Yong Palette (Vegan)
Now here's an all-in-one that suits my skin tone and makeup preferences a little more. I like the colorful eyeshadows, the bright blushes, and the pink highlight in this one. I also think the yellow eyeshadow makes for an excellent yellow blush if you're into that.
The palette is designed in such a way that it folds into itself so it's great to travel with too. This is cardboard so you might need to wrap it in your clothes before you pack it.
9. Best for Travel
Revolution x Rachel Leary Ultimate Goddess Palette (Not Vegan)
I don't want to sound like a broken record, but this palette has become a staple in my bag whenever I'm going out of town or even having a sleepover (ah, pre-COVID19 times...). I'd pack this with my other makeup and a colorful palette. That's how convenient this palette is.
I didn't have to think too hard to come up with nice eye looks that weren't too wild-looking (I always travel with family...my mom can be nitpicky sometimes). Warm-toned and glowy makeup is nice for travel too. For more of my thoughts on this palette, check this post out.
10. One You Do NOT Recommend
Obsession Dream With a Vision Palette
I can easily put any neutral palette down here, but that doesn't really seem fair. I don't recommend this palette for a number of reasons. One is, I don't think people who like bright shades will like this palette because it has a lot of pastel shades. I fell hard for the hype but I don't think it lives up to it because only some of the shades are worth using.
I was unimpressed by the quality of the eyeshadows because a lot of them were just too sheer and light on my eyes - and I'm already very pale. I like Revolution Makeup and I Heart Revolution, but I am not liking this sister brand very much. I am open to trying other releases in the future, but this one was disappointing.
Well there you have it, here are the palettes in my collection that I would recommend to people, and one that I don't. If you want to do this tag, feel free to do so. It's really fun and helps you rediscover some favorites in your collection.
