The Makeup Mess Tag

Writer's picture: Pomz CamposPomz Campos

Sometimes when we see such clean and well-done makeup on someone, we sometimes forget that the look definitely took a lot of effort, and probably even made a mess on that person's makeup space. I admit I'm not the cleanest or most organized person when it comes to makeup storage, tool maintenance, or my beauty routine, though I'd like to think I'm not that gross or messy.

I mean, not a mess like this

Not too long ago, Spooky Lips and Fat Hips on YouTube created this tag. Check her out too, she's a palette-obsessed makeup lover who's currently transitioning to being cruelty-free (which is always a plus in my book).

Many of the answers can be eye-opening, funny, and quite helpful if you were looking for cleaning or storage tips. So I decided to give this a shot. And as with all tags, feel free to do this tag as well for your YouTube account, blog, social media platform, or even just for yourself. They're always fun to do. Anyway, on to my answers for the questions on this tag:

How often do you wash your makeup brushes/sponges?

I have a lot of makeup brushes so I wash them every 1 to 2 weeks. I only have 2 sponges so I wash them both on a weekly basis. I do plan to write a more in-depth post about how I clean my makeup tools, so stay tuned for that.

How do you organize your makeup collection?

I organize my big palettes and chocolate palettes on shelves and have similar-sized palettes on display. The rest of my palettes are in a desk drawer.

All my face powders (highlighter, blush, and face palettes) are in a small container. Then all the complexion products and lip products I'm currently using are in a small lock-and-lock container because I don't have a lot of them.

Do you put your makeup products away after you are done using them, or leave them out for tomorrow?

All the makeup I'm currently using is on a desk, which is my preferred makeup space. It's a mess while I'm using it. Afterwards, I stack everything up neatly when I'm done so I can use them again the next day.

Loose or pressed powders?

Pressed powders all the way. I only use loose powder to bake and set my t-zone and even I think it makes a mess.

Do you ever fall asleep without taking your makeup off?

Yes. I do nap with makeup on sometimes. But never with a full face. Usually just my eye makeup and some concealer and powder. It's not a good thing to do to your skin, but I think there are worse skin crimes to commit. Besides, there are times when sleep is just way more important.

What makeup “rules” do you like to break?

I don't use bronzer or contour even if I'm pale. I prefer a lot of blush and highlighter because I'm trying to look punk and doll-like...not alive and three dimensional.

Will you use a product even if it is cracked or broken?

Powder products, yes. Liquid products that might make a mess? Nope.

How do you feel about sharing makeup?

I am only willing to share palettes and foundations in pump bottles. Anything with an applicator (concealer, liquid lipstick, mascaras, etc.) are a huge no.

How often do you declutter makeup?

I do it twice or thrice a year because I think it's better to compile everything and give a lot away. I do love trying new things so my collection is always growing and shrinking as the months go by.

Do you use your fingers to apply makeup?

For the most part, I use brushes and sponges for my makeup. Though I do admit that sometimes, using your fingers does result in a better finish. I use my fingers to apply silicone primers and metallic eyeshadows and glitter shades to my eyelid.

What products, if any, do you hoard in your purse, bag, backpack, etc?

I don't really hoard a lot of liquid lipsticks to begin with. So when I notice that a few shades are missing from my drawer or containers, I check my bags and it's like going on a mini treasure hunt.

What is your least favorite step in your makeup routine?

Mascara. I often forget to apply it altogether on some days and I often consider getting eyelash extensions because I don't have to worry about it.

What is your worst makeup memory?

I once wore this vampy Colourpop lipstick, an ultra matte, not realizing that it had been crumbling throughout the day. When I looked in the mirror, my lips were s patchy mess and it looked like I had dark pink freckles all over my mouth area.

For a while, I stayed away from vampy lip shades because I was scared that history would repeat itself. Eventually, I did find some nice deep shades from different brands that ended up I liking.

Well, it looked decent at first

Thank you so much for reading! I know this is different from my usual blog posts, but I did enjoy writing this tag post and I'm considering making it a more regular thing. Anyway, next week's post will be the usual palette review. Do stay tuned for that.
