Color Series: Green Palettes

Writer's picture: Pomz CamposPomz Campos

While it's not my favorite color to wear on my eyes, green eyeshadow is a beautiful color on brown eyes, so I found that it would be apt to add green to my color series of palettes!

Green palettes have gotten quite popular the last few months, from pastel mints, bright chartreuses, vibrant emeralds, to dark pines - it can be hard to decide on what kind of green palette works best for you if you've never had one before.

Do you want something monochromatic or something more versatile? Do you prefer colorful palettes or like some neutrals to keep things in your comfort zone? Whatever you're into, there's a green palette out there for you.

In this post, I have included 4 green palettes from different brands with different color stories at various price points to help you come to a decision. Each mini review will come with swatches on bare skin, the pros and cons of each palette, and a bunch of eye looks for each one.

Juvia's Place The Tribe Palette (Vegan)

This is what I call a small and colorful palette for the person who likes using colorful eyeshadow but wants to incorporate a few green shades to their looks. The other shades add a lot of variety to the looks you can come up with methinks.

So you get 5 matte shades in this palette and 4 metallic shades in varying tones, from light to dark. Since Juvia's Place is a black-owned brand, these shades are formulated to show up on any skin tone so you don't need to worry about pigmentation. You will just need a good base for it.

Pros

  • Most of the lighter mattes are great, they blend out easily and stay vibrant through heat and sweat

  • The inclusion of the orange and brown shades adds more versatility, especially if a monochromatic palette is too stifling for you

  • You get a nice mix of greens for a small 9-pan palette, from light to dark

  • The metallic shades look beautiful on the lids and are mostly easy to swipe on

What a difference lashes make! This review has been in the making for a long time

Cons

  • The matte shades may be long-lasting, but that also means that it's not that easy or quick to blend them out

  • The darker green shades (Kuba and San) have a different formula compared to the other shadows and are quite hard to work with

  • If you have a lot of Juvia's Place palettes, you might find a lot of repeat shades in this palette (which is something JP is notorious for doing) and feel ripped off

ColourPop Just My Luck Palette (Vegan)

If you love green shades (particularly, more cool-toned greens), this palette might just be your thing. But ColourPop advertises this palette to have every shade of green that you could want in different finishes. A monochromatic green palette is hard to find, so you're in luck that this exists (pun intended).

Just like the Juvia's Place palette, the Just My Luck Palette also has 5 mattes and 4 shimmers. The mattes feel nice to the touch and they're very pigmented. The metallic shades are also soft and easy to work with, having a foiled finish.

Pros

  • If you just love green eyeshadows, this is a nice curated monochromatic palette for you

  • The matte shades lean very much toward the cool-toned side of things, which is great if you happen to love cool-toned shades in general

  • The shades are all high-quality, perform well, and easy to work with - which is pretty rare for green eyeshadows

Cons

  • If you want something with more warmth in it, you won't really get it with this palette unfortunately

  • As you can see above, a lot of the looks that you'll come up with using the shades in this palette will pretty much look the same

  • Aside from Mo Samba and Charmed, the mattes swatch differently compared to when you put them on your lids and blend them out - a lot of them end up looking similar

  • I don't find this palette as diverse as it's advertised to be, there should be a matte neon green or avocado green

So the good news is that ColourPop has since released the Mint to Be palette (also vegan) that has a bit more diversity but is definitely more for people who like mint green. Since I prefer my greens on the warmer side, I passed on the Mint to Be palette and I decluttered the Just My Luck palette too.

Focallure Secret Palette (Vegan)

Known for duping more expensive and high-end palettes, Focallure decided to change tactics by letting their fans and audience pick out the shades of a palette they're releasing. The result is this palette. I was actually gifted this palette by my boyfriend so I didn't buy this myself, but I decided to include this palette in this post anyway because it is a green palette and my review will remain honest and unbiased.

If you still want a monochromatic palette that has a bit more versatility in terms of shade range and finish, this is great for you. This is honestly what I wanted the Just My Luck to look like, and I'm glad that this palette was voted into existence. While the Secret Palette does only have 4 matte shades, each one is so distinct from the other that it's still possible to come up with green looks that don't look too similar. I think the people who voted on the color selection really did well because it really is well-rounded.

Pros

  • This is a diverse and versatile green monochromatic palette

  • I really like the formula of the matte shades here, they're very pigmented and easy to blend out (even the pastel shade builds up really nicely)

  • A lot of the metallic shades have interesting finishes and some of them really pop out a lot on your lids

  • You can come up with all kinds of green looks that will look different from each other, which can be hard to do with a monochromatic palette

Yes, I did use a couple of shades on the palette as an inner corner highlight and as a brow setting powder

Cons

  • I think the pans are a bit too small for the size of this palette, it has a lot of space for such teeny shadows

  • The fallout on Starlette is really bad, even after you've set it with setting spray. You definitely need to use glitter glue with this.

  • While the metallic shades offer variety in finish, they also vary in formula. There's a lot of inconsistency that require different application techniques (which is a hassle)

I Heart Revolution Tasty Avocado Palette (Not Vegan)

The quality in this palette is exactly like the Rose Gold Chocolate palette. I Heart Revolution has finally upped their quality for this palette, and I'm so happy about it! This palette is definitely for the maximalist who wants a bigger palette with all the green shades and a few browns to keep things well-rounded.

You get all kinds of greens, in varying tones and finishes, and a few brown shades to make playing with color a bit easier if you're a beginner with color. But even if you love colorful eyeshadows (hello), the Avocado palette is still the ultimate green palette if you were looking for one.

While I didn't really use the browns as much as I used the greens, I still really enjoy the color story of this palette. Well done to I Heart Revolution on this one!

Pros

  • All the metallic shades are soft and don't seal over themselves (which is a huge deal for any Revolution Beauty brand)

  • You get a beautiful array of greens in this palette, both cool and warm tones - letting you create all sorts of green looks

  • The matte eyeshadows built up well and blended out with no issues

  • The brown shades complement the green shades well

Cons

  • I think there are too many versions of the same minty shimmery color (Brunch, Bite, and Foody), these do have different undertones but it's still hard to tell them apart

  • Some of the metallic shades are crumbly and flaky, you might need an adhesive to prevent fallout

  • Revolution Makeup is the only UK brand on this list, making this palette the least accessible for most people as it can take longer for parcels to reach the Philippines

My Final Thoughts

For context, it usually takes me months to put together content for a blog post like this. I usually give myself a few weeks to a month to test out each palette, and I give myself time in between palettes. Making this blog post has made me realize that I don't like green eyeshadow very much.

But I admit, I did come up with green looks that I did like, such as this one

But nonetheless, I do think there are people who will benefit from seeing a blog post like this. If I had to pick a favorite from these palettes, I would pick the Avocado Palette for its variety, versatility, and formula. Then, the Juvia's Place The Tribe palette, especially if you're looking for a smaller palette that's still fun. And obviously, I'd pick the Secret Palette over the Just My Luck Palette.
