If you happen to own a makeup blender or sponge that you keep in your kit or personal makeup table, they can get dirty very fast. And unlike brushes, they're a lot trickier to clean because of what they're made of. In my years of doing makeup and taking care of my tools, I've found the most effective way to get my sponges as clean as possible. I enjoy this method a lot and find that it really works for me, so I'm going to share it with you in this post.
So, you might have heard of the microwave cleaning hack that was going around in 2017. I would not recommend this hack because it's extremely dangerous. Not only do you risk scalding yourself with extremely hot water, but you can also cut yourself on broken glass as microwaving ceramic or glass for too long will cause it to shatter.
This method is a modification of that hack that is much safer to do. I came across it on YouTube a long time ago but that person has since closed their account. Ami Desai does have a similar hack that you can view here.
Get a heat resistant bowl
Go for a ceramic or glass bowl because you will be using hot water for this method.
Soak your sponges in any kind of food-grade oil
You a want dense oil that will penetrate the sponge and mix with the product inside the sponge. Soak your dirty sponges in oil and start squeezing them to get as much of the old foundation, concealer, and powder out. When it starts to get stiff, you can stop and set the sponges aside.
Fill the bowl with soapy water
I prefer using dish soap since it's designed to strip off grease and oil of any kind, drawing out any product and oil from your sponges over time. Mix an adequate amount of dish soap and water in the bowl
Microwave the bowl and water for 1 minute
Pop the bowl in the microwave and heat the soapy water for one minute. I've found that this is enough time to get the soapy water hot but not boiling. Take the bowl out afterward and put your sponges in the water. Then, leave it.
Let cool and rinse.
After the water is cool enough to touch, wash the sponges under running water. Make sure to squeeze as much of the product, oil, and soap out until the water comes out clear and not sudsy anymore. Don't worry if your sponge is stained, this is normal as some foundations can stain sponge material. If you want to remove stains, you can rub your sponge on soap or squeeze it after you put it in the hot soapy water.
And you're done! Put your sponges somewhere to dry or on a towel. You can have a nice clean sponge the next time you reach for it. I hope you found this post helpful in getting your sponges clean.
