Revolution Review: Tropical Paradise Palette Review

Writer's picture: Pomz CamposPomz Campos

Since I own a lot of Revolution Beauty products, this feature should come as no surprise at all. It is all about the Tropical Paradise palette, their collaboration with Tammi Clarke. She is part of the original three YouTubers who started working with the brand in 2016, the other two being Carmimua and Sophdoesnails. After reviewing Carmi’s collab, it would only make sense that I would be reviewing this as well.

The Palette

Encased in rose gold packaging with “Tammi” emblazoned on the front in black ink, this palette features 23 mostly matte and warm-toned shades. Tammi intended for this palette to be a neutral palette filled with pinks, oranges, and rich browns (her favorite kinds of eyeshadow colors) with a few bright pops of color.

As she is from the Caribbean, Tammi wanted the color scheme to reflect the colors usually associated with a tropical place with a rich carnival culture. So the picture above is what you get. I think she wanted this palette to appeal to a lot of people and most people do prefer warm-toned eyeshadows. At the same time, people who love more colorful shades will have eyeshadows to play with as well.

I actually did read a few comments online pointing out how similar this palette looks like to the Kat Von D 10th Anniversary palette, with some even stating that this palette ripped it off. Tammi has clarified that this palette’s color scheme was finalized in December 2017 while the Kat Von D palette’s full reveal came out on March of this year. For comparison’s sake, here are both of them together.

I don't really see it...

The only similarity I really see is that both palettes feature a double row of slim rectangular pans. I think the Kat Von D palette is a more proper rainbow palette and Tammi’s collaboration is definitely more warm-toned overall.

I will also say that the Kat Von D palette is a vegan product, while the Revolution Beauty palette is not as it does contain carmine, which is a red pigment derived from crushed beetles. If you have a possible allergy to this ingredient or have other concerns with it. please keep this in mind. Anyway, onto the swatches.

Golden Sands – gold shimmer

Rainforest – dark khaki matte

Waterfall – ocean blue matte

Midnight Stroll - black matte

Last Row

Left to Right:

Coconut Cream – cream matte Nutmeg – caramel brown matte Isle of Spice – cinnamon matte

I swear, I really tried building Coconut Cream up, I am just too pale

As you can see, many of the shades don’t swatch all that well, and it was a challenge to even get the product out with my finger because of the pan sizes.

Also, I find the way the shades are arranged to be confusing. A lot of similar-looking shades are too near to each other and the more colorful shades are in random places that don’t make sense. It just looks intimidating to work with.

For this look, I blended out Waterfall in the crease, put Paradise on the lid, and smoked out Golden Sands and Rainforest on the lower lash line

I’m no makeup novice at all, but I look at the way this palette looks and I just feel lost on what kind of look to do. I find myself always gravitating to the more colorful shades, and I ignore the neutral shades entirely. I feel like that keeps me from fully enjoying all the shades in this palette.

My Final Thoughts

I honestly think this palette suffers from a packaging problem. This type of layout is not my favorite to being with and I really dislike how narrow the pans at the bottom are. If you’re using Coconut Cream, Nutmeg, or Isle of Spice to set your eyeshadow primer or as a transition shade, you would need a really small brush to dip into them. I mean, powder from Coconut Cream has spread to Enchanting and Burning Heat, which really bothers me.

As for the quality of the eyeshadows themselves, I have also found that this palette’s overall quality is inferior to the quality that Carmi and Soph’s collaborations have. There are just too many colors that go on too sheer, like Moonlight, Midnight Stroll, and Caribbean. I am already pale, so I can imagine that someone with a deeper skin tone than me would have to build this up more that I have to.Which is pretty weird, considering that Tammi herself has a deep skin tone.

I am sad that this is how I feel about this palette because this was one of the collaborations I was more excited to try. Perhaps if you’re struggling with the packaging and layout like me, I suggest you depot these shades and arrange them in a way that makes sense to you. Though if you simply want to know if this collaboration is worth buying, I don't recommend this one.
