2019 is the year that makeup companies in the Philippines step up their eyeshadow game! Among the emergence of indie brands like Filipinta Beauty and Glamskin Manila - one local drugstore brand decided to be a trailblazer again and come out with more colorful palettes too! This is Detail Makeover - now I've sang their liquid lipsticks praises a few times on this blog and I also lamented how boring their eyeshadows were.
That being said, they teased this palette sometime in May and dropped it on September. I immediately went and bought it because I have never seen a more beautiful array of colors in a local palette. So enough drivel, let's go straight into the review!
The Palette
Encased in cardboard packaging, this palette opens to 15 eyeshadows in metallic and matte finishes. Some of the matte shades are bigger than others, namely Morn, Warmth, and Blaze. The bigger pan sizes are likely because these will be the colors that people will use the most as they are mid-toned and can be transition colors. I know I used Warmth and Blaze for that purpose a lot.
There are 6 metallic eyeshadows and 9 matte shadows in an array of neutral to bright colors. If you've always wanted to try brighter colors while being able to stay in your comfort zone, this definitely looks like a good palette for that.
But before I go into swatches, I will say that while Detail Makeover is a cruelty-free brand, this product is not vegan. It contains Magnesium Stereate, which could be animal-derived - and Carmine, which is definitely animal-derived as it comes from crushed beetles. If you prefer vegan products or have allergies to these sort of ingredients, definitely skip this product.
The Shadows
I looove the way these shadows swatch. They are so soft to the touch and easy to work with. Here are what the look like when they're built up:
The metallic shades definitely have a flakier consistency but have a wet, foiled finish on the eyes so don't put too much pressure on the eyeshadows and definitely use your finger to apply these in a swiping motion over your lid.
If you prefer to use a brush to tap on the product, use a glitter glue so you get the payoff on your eye and not on your face. If you wanted to use the metallic shades as a glitter liner, this is a way you can do that. You can use the mattes as is.
Makeup Possibilities
Right off the bat from the swatches, it's very obvious that most of the neutral matte shades lack opacity and some pigmentation. I've tried making looks with it and it's really hard to get them to show up. They look more vivid in the pan but don't show up as rich when you swatch them. I found that this was also the case when apply this to your eyes with a brush. Can you even see where I put Morn below?
Blaze totally drowned it out! The colorful shades are the standouts of this palette for sure because they actually pack a punch (being pressed pigments) but are still easy to work with. The only exception I found was Nightfall, as it doesn't show up as deep either. Still, if you wanted to get this palette because you're more of a color lover, you won't be disappointed:
I suppose this somewhat makes it beginner-friendly, but still doesn't make a lot of sense. A palette with high-quality neutral shades is way better for an eyeshadow novice than a palette with disappointing neutral shades and great colorful shades.
My Final Thoughts
Overall, I can say that the lack of consistency in pigmentation is what ruins this palette for me. As someone who cares about tone range in addition to shade ranges, I'm definitely disappointed in how the neutral shades perform because that's a huge dealbreaker for people who will buy this palette for the neutrals and not the brights.
On the other hand, the more colorful matte shades perform a lot better in terms of color payoff. And of course, the metallic shades have a stellar formula. So while I personally like this palette, I acknowledge that someone who prefers browns and wants good quality eyeshadows would probably dislike this palette.
If you have similar-looking palettes like the Revolution Makeup Extra Spice or the I Heart Revolution Lemon Drizzle Palette, you're not really missing out on this palette at all - and you get more variety. I'm still waiting to see what Detail Makeover will release next though because this palette shows that they know what their audience wants and they want to stand out. I am happy that Detail Makeover has done this, but I also know that they can do a whole lot better.
