Sometime in early 2018, I heard about the BeachBorn PH when I was looking for a locally made purple shampoo to neutralize my yellow bleached hair when I was still trying (and failed) to go gray. BeachBorn is a local brand in the Philippines that offers all natural and handcrafted products that are "inspired by wanderlust and the jetset lifestyle".

They have a range of bath and body products, many of which come in portable packaging with plastic-free options. What simply started out as a purchase of purple shampoo and conditioner has now turned into a sizable collection of products. Given that I've been regularly using a lot of the brand's products for months at this point, I decided to dedicate an entire post to a bunch of their products that I've tried thus far and what I think of them.

Hair Care

CLASSY NOT BRASSY PURPLE SHAMPOO

This was the first ever product that I bought from this brand, along with their purple conditioner (which I didn't really like). I have since repurchased this product several times, and still use it as my regular shampoo, even if the ends of my hair are usually a dark teal now.

Pros

  • This is a really pigmented and potent toning shampoo so it really will neutralize any yellow tones in your blonde hair

  • Even if this is really pigmented, it is dye safe because it doesn't contain any sulfates so my hair color can stay vibrant for over 5 weeks without fading too much, and it helps keep the teal nice and dark

  • This really bubbles up into a nice lather, and it's really good at getting whatever grease, dirt, and excess product that's left in your hair and will really leave it feeling clean after

  • The shampoo's scent doesn't come from artificial fragrances and is free of parabens

Cons

  • This is really drying so you'll really need a moisturizing conditioner if you're going to use this product

  • If your hair is bleached a light blonde, this can also stain your hair rose gold or light fuchsia and it will be a bit hard to wash off before your ends are just ash blonde

SUNSET SPRAY

Due to the fact that the ends of my hair are bleached to a Level 10 blonde without hair dye, my ends tend to tangle very easily, and I often spend a lot of time getting rid of the knots in my hair. So a leave-on conditioner was very much welcome. Then, this product came out (cue angel choirs).

Aside from being a moisturizing detangler that leaves your hair soft and shiny, the many claims of this product include heat protection (hair styling and UV rays), frizz control, and hair nourishment. So, I expected a lot from this product, and I'm going to break down my thoughts on it below:

Pros

  • It does a good job at detangling even the tightest knots in the incredibly chemical processes of my hair

  • The formula is definitely lightweight so it doesn't feel heavy or too sticky after you use this product

  • This is one of the vegan products from this brand

Cons

  • You need to use a lot of this product to get it to work, so it's definitely not a "less is more" type of product, it also can get a bit greasy since you have to use so much

  • While many leave-on conditioners work on either wet or dry hair, this product does work a lot more if your hair is damp, which can be a bit of a hassle if you don't wash your hair every day

COCOA BUTTER GUILTLESS CONDITIONING BAR

Since I was looking into less plastic use, conditioning bars were one of the first products I wanted to try. Given that cream formula conditioners might not work too well if your hair is already so dry from being bleached or dyed, anything to revive the texture and get rid of that sort of pubic hair look (if you have bleached hair, you know what I mean) on bleached hair is heaven sent.

I figured that a conditioning bar would be even more conditioning since you're basically rubbing a block of oil on your hair and that denser formula would definitely stick. BeachBorn claims that this product is 10 times more moisturizing than regular conditioner, so I thought, why not?

Pros

  • This is by far, the best conditioner that I have found to work on my dry bleached ends, it really rehhydrates chemically processed hair and keeps it from drying out and getting tangled when it's dry

  • I really like how travel-friendly this is too, you can keep it in a tin container and bring it in your travel bag with ease

  • It smells like dark chocolate - which is always a good thing

Cons

  • Not too great in terms of moisture longevity though, so you will have to use this every day and you will really need to rub the bar into your hair to get the product to stick

  • This bar is the old formula, so it melts during travel and breaks off into big sticky chunks while you're using it, not fun

  • Since conditioner is known to take out your loose hair, some strands can eventually swirl around and stick to the bar over time, which can be a sanitation issue for some people

ONYA NEES SHAMPOO BAR

While traveling, you will get dirtier and sweatier and sometimes you just want something easy to pack in your carry-on baggage that won't spill during travel. Enter the shampoo bar. This is a travel-friendly clarifying shampoo bar with oil control properties from BeachBorn, given how greasy and weighed down my hair can get, I thought of getting it for travel.

Pros

  • A lot of shampoo bars often don't work up a nice amount of lather and don't give you bubbles, this one does

  • This doesn't melt as easily as the conditioning bar does, so you can just opt to use just this and stick with your regular conditioner if you still want to reduce your plastic use but keep things more convenient for you

  • It really does well at getting rid of that dirty and greasy feeling you have in your hair after some time of not washing it

  • If you frequently dye your hair different colors, this product's formula will strip even the most stubborn and potent of hair dyes off your hair

  • Speaking of being a clarifying product, you can also use it to clean your equipment and tubs after you dye your hair at home (no dye left)

Cons

  • If you prefer to keep your hair color, a few uses with this product (in my experience, twice) will really get rid of a LOT of your color (my bright teal ends faded into a neon seafoam green in some parts)

  • This bar seems to be made of shavings that were pressed into the circular shape, so it does break off in these strange flimsy chucks when it gets wet or melted that can leave residue

  • When it melts during transit, it's doesn't stabilize as easily as the conditioning bar does in the fridge so you will end up with a deformed and sticky bar (I think this is due to the lack of oils)

Skin Care (Witch Hazel Products)

WITCH HAZEL EXTRACT

Witch hazel has been purported to have many uses, from getting rid of breakouts, wound treatment, and even skin toning purposes, ideal for people with oily and acne-prone skin. So when I saw that BeachBorn had pure witch hazel extract, I bought it.

This is the second bottle that I've used of this product that they reformulated it from being clear and watery to being amber-colored with a richer and more slippery texture.

Pros

  • One of my holy grail skin care products - it works so well in drying up breakouts and can be used as a spot treatment

  • Compared to the old formula, I personally like the newer formula because i feel like it's a lot more potent and sticks to the skin better

Cons

  • The newer formula is not very dry skin friendly, you might get an irritation if you use this too much - it's best for breakouts and oily areas

WITCH HAZEL WASH

Have you ever found yourself showering and you absent-mindedly put product on your hands and are about to wash your face when you realize you just poured intimate wash on your palm? Even with the area and product reversed, it can be an annoying problem to have.

While I did initially start using this product because I wanted a facial wash that would actually get rid of my breakouts, I've found that I can avoid those awkward situations too. It's a non-soap cleanser that's tough on your skin issues but gentle enough to use for sensitive areas, including your intimate area.

Pros

  • This has honestly made my skin so much better in terms of keeping my oil and breakouts at bay

  • Yes, it is also pretty effective as a feminine wash as well

  • BeachBorn sells a big bottle of this that you can use to refill your foaming bottle, though you can opt to just buy the big bottle and use this product without the bubbles

This is what the refill bottle looks like

Cons

  • The pain when this accidentally gets into your eyes can be excruciating, especially because the formula is so watery

  • Compared to other facial washes, I don't really see how using a foaming bottle to dispense this product makes a difference so I doubt you need to buy it in that bottle (I just kept mine for travel)

  • This is not a makeup remover so you will still need an oil-based cleanser to get your makeup off, you can probably just finish the cleaning with this

WITCH HAZEL HEALING TONER

This product is meant to be a face mist that gets rid of breakouts while moisturizing the skin and can also double as a dewy makeup setting spray. I was initially intrigued by the claims of this product because toners usually just do one thing or the other. And since it came in a spray bottle, it was definitely a more sanitary way to get the product on your face.

Pros

  • I really like the light lavender and chamomile scent of this product, it smells fragrant and pleasant enough without being overpowering

  • Since it has the addition of lavender oil and aloe vera gel, this is a more accessible way for people with dry skin to enjoy the benefits of witch hazel without the skin irritations or the resulting dryness

  • This product has a well-made spray bottle that really has a nice even mist that settles gently all over your face, you can definitely reuse it for setting sprays or rooms sprays when the product runs out

Cons

  • Aside from the scent and bottle, this product was complete dud for me - this actually made me break out

  • Since I liked the scent, I tried using this as a room spray instead but that didn't work either because it was too light to really diffuse throughout a room

  • If you like aromatherapy and use scents like lavender to help you fall asleep, that is also a fail with this product

My Final Thoughts

Overall, I'm really impressed with most of the products that this brand has to offer. The products that worked for me were worth the hype and the money (even though many of them are affordable). BeachBorn also has branches in Singapore and Dubai.

Oh, and if you're wondering about what to do with the empty bottles, they actually do provide refill services for a few of their products. You just need to ask them about it. I definitely recommend checking out this brand. They'll take your beauty routine to another place.
